What’s it gonna take
to get you into a new poem today?
I’ve got all kinds for all folks
I’m sure I’ve got something for you
Are you depressed?
That’s a great time to read–or,
celebratory too
You see, clever or deep or obscure or obtuse,
no matter the style you prefer,
now or next week,
I bet you’ll be taking one home for regular use,
to repeatedly read, in fact
why don’t you take two?
One, to keep close,
a daily driver, as it were, to commute to work,
or take to the store
And then another,
for which you might reach
only when you need it more?
Go ahead, read a few,
take all the time you need, a good poem
sells itself,
and I’m sure you’ll agree as you read,
a poem can be like a ride,
a trip from end to end;
but unlike a ride you can start in the middle,
or wherever it grabs you (there’s rules
and then there are rules), and while
a poem isn’t a riddle, it could be as well,
adaptability
a key feature at a poem’s birth, still,
remember, there’s nothing to solve
that hasn’t arrived with you
So when you find yourself lingering
on a line, a pairing of words,
an image within a poem that seems to collude
with your own feelings,
that is when
you know
the correct poem has found you
so please, take it home as your own,
with thanks, my gift to you
love this, it wouldn’t take much
